Destinations International 2019 Annual Convention

Dennis Franczak
With the Destinations International 2019 Annual Convention coming up next week, we thought it’d be fun to take a closer look at this year’s conference destination: St. Louis. Every time we attend the Annual Conference we like to find things that might just be worth sneaking out on a session or two to check out! With that in mind, here are our Top 10 must-see attractions in St. Louis.

When You Arrive
If you come in on Sunday or Monday, take a 15-minute detour west and visit Historic St. Charles!  St. Charles is a gorgeous and charming little town that looks like a Norman Rockwell Painting. Walk down Main Street, see the shops, hit the new brew pub, or have an ice cream at one of the many little stores. This detour is totally worth it!

During the Conference
Want to sneak away from the sessions and try a few “must dos?” pick from this list.

1. Laumeier Sculpture Park:  http://www.laumeiersculpturepark.org/

Art and nature come together. Walk the grounds and see art in a different way at one of the first—and largest—sculpture parks in the country.
2. Contemporary Arts Museum: https://camstl.org/  And Pulitzer Art Foundation: https://pulitzerarts.org/

See the artistic community evolve in real time. With rotating exhibits that showcase the best in contemporary art, this midtown staple is full of new perspectives on creativity.
3. Head to the Delmar Loop and visit Vintage Vinyl: https://www.vintagevinyl.com/ followed by lunch at Blueberry Hill: https://blueberryhill.com/

Cruise down one of America’s 10 greatest streets and stop in at two of the Gateway Greats. Plus, the Loop is home to 145 unique shops and restaurants, so if you have a free afternoon, there’s plenty more where that came from.
4. Pappy’s Smokehouse for world class BBQ: https://www.pappyssmokehouse.com/

I don’t know how we got this far without bringing up Barbeque, but Pappy’s is an absolute must. A next-generation BBQ joint that’s steeped in tradition, Pappy’s is the Real Deal.
5. Tour Cathedral Basilica St. Louis: http://cathedralstl.org/

You can’t miss it. Literally and figuratively. The Cathedral stands tall in the Central West End and offers a one-of-a-kind glimpse at the storied history of St. Louis. Come pay your respects to the city’s patron saint.
6. Blues City Deli for great food and an energetic live music vibe: https://www.bluescitydeli.com/

Who’s hungry? When you’re craving a Po’ Boy or a Muffuletta, there’s no place finer. Plus, this mom and pop shop is a proud stop on the American Blues Highway—so be sure to catch some live music while you’re there.
7. The Hill:  https://www.tripsavvy.com/walking-tour-of-the-hill-in-st-louis-3137318

The city’s little Italy—but that’s the only thing little about it. The flavors, cultures, personalities, even the churches, are big. Take a walking tour—and bring your appetite along.
8. Ice cream? Nah. Head to Ted Drewes for Custard: http://teddrewes.com/

This place is nothing short of an institution. Combine tons of flavors of their signature frozen custard with a variety of toppings, and you get more possibilities than you can shake a spoon at.
9. Tour the Fox Theatre:  https://www.fabulousfox.com/

The 90-year-old gem in Grand Center has played host to a variety of A-list movies, musical acts, and shows throughout the years, but its personality hasn’t changed a bit—right down to the big brass doors. It’s an experience you have to see to believe.
10. Rent a paddle boat and relax with food and drink afterwards at the Boathouse Forest Park: http://boathousestl.com/

Get away from the rush of city life and take a break for an afternoon. Boathouse Forest Park offers scenic paddle boating, kayaking, and live music. All with some of the best dockside bites you can find anywhere.
We can’t wait to check out a few of these things. One thing we like to do is hit a hideaway or two while we are there for a little cocktail and good conversation. If you’d like to join our little group, we’d love to connect with you while we’re there, so send us a note below to meet up and say Hi.
